Chapter Twelve

JACK

We made it out of Aquarine Palace in record time. Desmond had everything ready before the next crazy wave of Seer magic settled across the land. I watched him become more animated than I had ever seen him as he talked logistics with the palace crew, and Atam’s fondness shone through as he tutted and tsked around him. He had the bags packed and found some more clothes for all of us. Food. Water canisters. And rides.

I didn’t know all of the etiquette in Obius, but something told me that horses were a no-go when there were people with hooves and tails walking around.

I was wrong.

The horses were chatty. They had opinions about everything, and were not thrilled that their contract was so long, how could you possibly expect us to run for that long? Their thoughts were just as busy, and I needed to set up some mental boundaries before I lost it.

Diego bumped against my shoulder.

“A flower for your thoughts?”

“There’s too many damn thoughts, you’d run out of flowers.”

“Lucky for me that we’re here, where flowers are plentiful.”

I smiled despite myself. It would still take a day or even two to reach Trellis Castle. Aquarine was in the heart of Chilijan, and we had to get back to the border before facing another day to reach the castle itself.

“Desmond seems to be settling into himself,” Diego said when it was clear that I couldn’t carry on with my side of the conversation.

“He does, doesn’t he? He seems like he’s more at peace with himself now.”

“Everyone needs to say their goodbyes,” Diego said softly, and flashes of his tear-marked face came to me.

“Did it help? To see her grave?”

“I’m not sure, really. It made it real. And maybe that’s what I needed more than anything. It’s hard to believe I’m even back in Obius. Seeing her altar was, ah, what would you call it in human? Here, I’d say stone making.”

“A reality check?” I laughed as he struggled to find the human words and Diego smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes. A shadow of the broken man he was on Earth came back then, and it took everything in me not to knock us both off these horses for a hug.

“Yes, but also… humbling to see another outcome from the Shattering. Of course, she would die without magic. Everyone would. But until I saw the altar, it was just too blurry to imagine?” Diego raked his hands through his hair, again bumping his horns and cursing under his breath.

The horses kept chatting, but I had gotten better about tuning it out.

“Did you see the feathers? Blue! Crazy. They better pay well.”

Sorta better, anyway.

“It feels like everyone is staring,” he mumbled as he picked at the reins. He didn’t seem to hear the horses’ gossip, so I tried to reassure him. The reins were old and well-worn, and Diego rubbed the leather-like material to give himself something to do.

Diego seemed natural in a saddle. I saw more flashes of his life on Earth, wearing older clothes from eras past.
